Well after trying Otos out for a while, including having the longest lived one only last about a month, I tried the clown pleco. He's been in the tank for about two months now and the puffers have never looked at him twice.

I have a single Dwarf Puffer in a 20 gallon with many guppies and a Clown Pleco. This set up has been going for over a year, maybe two now. I had Ottos in there too, but they kept dying. There was an Albino Bristlenose in there also for over a year and she was fine, but seemed to run out of algae so I put her into my 46.

The only problem I've had with my puffer was when I first brought him/her home, I initially had two in the tank. Even though they were together at the pet store, they didn't get along at home. Within a day, one puffer was dead with a bite sized chunk missing from his head! They were originally put in there for snail control. My remaining puffer has done a great job at that and "helps" with some extra guppies too. (There's still too many guppies though. )
