The only time you can trust an LFS is if they are a true fish only store. They are few and far between, but if you are lucky to have one I would consider developing a relationship with them. My LFS only sells fresh and saltwater fish and supplies, everyone who works their keeps at least 4 tanks and are willing to say "come in tomorrow when bob is here. He is our big reefer." or something like that if you have a specific question. I also just recently found out they will price match online prices for at least the supplies (not sure about livestock).

Anyway, I did not mean to ramble. I just wanted you to know that there are good LFS out there, but if they also sell dog bowls and parrots they probably know little to nothing about fish.

Totally agree, when I got my betta tank 3 years ago, the lady at petsmart said to throw 12 minnwos in a 2.5 gallon tank and when they died it was safe to put fish in. It was terrible.

This might be the most ridiculous thing I have ever hear from a petsmart employee. I occasionally go to the evil empire if I know they have something I need and it is cheap, or if they have a really good deal on some kind of livestock (like small common plecos for $1) but I would not suggest that unless you have a quarantine tank set up. They basically just want to tell you what you want to hear so you buy something they have in the store.

I stopped buying fish from PetSmart - they never lived long. I have no idea why, but they just are not as hearty as the fish i get from my (mostly) fish-only LFS.

You should complain to the manager about how stupid that is. They could have at least tried to sell you a book or something. I stopped listening to them when one said bettas like living in those tiny cups. Some may have a clue but ill never listen to any of them.
