So I finally got a Birchir and it rocks. When I put it into the tank it kicked the crap out of the swordtails that killed my old snail and dwarf frog. :(

So do Birchirs eat flake food?

Is there anything else I should feed it?

Can you please explain what you mean by this? Were they eaten? Expect that from bichirs as these are ambush predators.

The main idea is to vary the food diet. They should eat flakes but they should not be provided one food exclusively. Try frozen foods. They need plenty of proteins. Make sure they digest their food well or risk constipation.

as lupin has stated above
bichirs are predators, they will eat small fish and anything else will be 'tasted' to see if it is edible.
they do however have very poor eyesight and as such tend to bumble around the tank searching for food.
this needs to be taken into account when feeding, so sinking food is best.
I feed all my bichirs on Hikari carnivorous pellets, prawn/shrimp, cockle, muscle, JMC catfish pellets and (believe it or not) algae wafers; which my 17" ornate swallows whole).
