i've been having somewhat of the same problem.. What i do is shove blood wok cubes 1/2 way into the sand and he ususaly gets to it wihtout to much problems. An alternative I;ve been thinking about is loading my tank with about 12-20 shrimp and that way he can hunt them..

I am another soul happily lost to the aquarium addiction..

150gal freshwater
7 Angels (2 marble, 1 blue diamond, 1 leopard, 1 not too sure & 2 Koi)
10 Serpae Longfin Tetras
6 Congo Tetras
2 Clown Loachs
2 Gold Gouramis
1 Dwarf Blood Gouramis
1 Blue Gourami
1 Moonlight Gourami
2 Baby Hypostomus plecostomus
1 Grey Bichir (4 1/2" - 5 ")
1 Crab

What sort of African tank is this? What are the water parameters? To be honest, if it's a high ph tank, I wouldn't keep the birchir in there, as they are low ph, soft water fish. They're also nocturnal predators, and will always be out competed for food.

Bichirs, AKA polypterus do fine in all Ph's. As far as the feeding goes, feed the cichlids, wait a bit, turn out the lights and then throw some in for your poly. If you put his food in the same place, he'll know where to go. Or, another idea, feed the cichlids, and then put some food in the opposite side of the tank.
Are you feeding floating or sinking foods? Hope this helps
