dinosaur bichir and needlefish??? is it possible?
Ive got a dinosaur bichir and hes still small not even 5 inches yet really. But my thing is im getting a 75g tank and i want to know can possibly get like 2 or 1 needlefish and have my dinosaur bichir in there AND also at a ornate or armored bichir? possibly? I kow its probably a simple question and all but I dont know about too many fish. the thing i though about is the needlefishes slimness ya know? would the bichirs consider them possible food or not even with theyre length and fast rate of growth? and would this tank size be fairly suitable for all these dudes? lol thanks ppl for any help you can give me
That is not a combination I would attempt, especially in a small tank like 75 gallons. To have a decent chance of making something like that work it would require well over 300 gallons and very well decorated. Those fish all get quite large and are all predatory. The bichirs (polypterous) will eat most things it can fit into its mouth, and can be quite aggressive with their own kind if they don't have enough territory. The territory needed by a fish that grows 14 or 20 inches is going to be quite large. Even one bichir in a 75 will push its limits full grown, and should really have at least 125 gallons minimum. If they're well cared for, they all grow quite fast, too.

ok cool thanks people thats what i was thinking I wasn't 100% but that was why i was concerned and didnt think it was a good possibility. The people at my lps only know the basic little simple stuff and i really didnt think it would work out alright for them being together. They were only going by the 1in=1gal measurments and thats what i was thinking too. what a shame because i really like both of those fish but I've heard needlefish are quite whats the word im looking for uhh frail? like theyre aren't quite as hardy and strong as some fish and they are a little harder to maintain as far as hardiness. And I didn't realize i would need quite that much space thanks for that info
when you go back to your lps, maybe let them know that the 1 inch rule reads like this: 1 inch of adult fish per gallon. There is a big difference between that and 1 inch per gallon, especially when starting out with young fish that grow large.
