Bichir Compatability

I would like to know if a dinosaur bichir would work with a group of adult American Cichlids. There is a store near my home that sells bichirs at about 7 inches long. The pet store keeps the bichirs with 3-4 inch red devils and jack dempseys. I have a 125 gal aquarium that I plan on down sizing by selling the female fish I have been breeding with. In the picture you can kinda see what I have in there and the set up, but I'll list off what will be left in there before a new tankmate is added whether its a bichir or not.

There will be:
1 male 1 female convict
1 Jack Dempsey
1 Oscar
1 Managuese
1 Featherfin Catfish
1 Common Pleco
1 Green Terror

I have another 46 gallon tank that is established. (It was used as a breeding tank) So I have that to work with as well. Although I would like to try different fish in that tank now. Any comments or suggestions would be great.

Hi dreesa,

Your set-up is very similiar to my own. The Birchir gets on fine with my JD, Texas and Sevs. I can't see a problem. Just plenty of filteration and hope they all get along.

Daz your fish are quite different than his. I wouldn't do it. Either you Oscar will eat your bichir or your jag/convict will pester it to death.

I also think this mix will be problematic at best.
the pleco will get a taste for the bichir slime coact and will end up stripping it off.

I got plecos with my bichir, and no problems at all.

I have a L235 with mine but I would never risk a common or sailfin with them
