Unless the 55 gallon is just a temp home until he gets bigger I would shy away from getting an arrowana.

Common plecos, tinfoil barbs (just make sure they are in a large enough school to not be nippy), irredecent sharks all could be decent tankmates. Anything that stays near the bottom of the tank could be fine though I would err on the side of caution and make sure they are larger fish. I have seen people with oscars and dempseys in their tanks with arrowanas but I don't particularly like that idea as arrowanas are easily spooked and love to jump. An Oscar or a Dempsey could mean that you find your arrow dead on the floor one morning.

I would recommend not getting an arrowana unless your tank is 150+ gallons minimum.

If you do end up getting an Arrowana, and he grows big enough to eat golf fish, DONT feed him gold fish. They give the beautiful fishes drop eye.

My friend has one in his 180 gal. tank. He's about 5 years old and as he got older, he became very aggresive toward other fish so now has to be kept alone.

And he feds him live crickets and shrimp (from the supermarket - same as we would eat).

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.
