It depends, is this a 29G, a 30G, a 30 breeder?

When it comes to bumblebees the important thing is floor space, not tank volume. I keep a pair in a 20 long, but it's only 1/2 full. I think more than two in that space would be pushing it. They're mean little buggers and very territorial towards each other. On the other hand, there's tons of great brackish fish that you can house with them, as they're too small to do much harm to a fish that can stand up for it's self.

A 40 breeder has quite a decent amount of floor space, so assuming you could break up the lines of sight with rocks, plants, driftwood, etc you could probably fit a decent number in there, maybe 6-8.

But like okiemavis said, you could always play it safe and stick with four or so of them, then round out your stocking with some other compatible fish. Knight gobies would be cool.

Wouldn't a knight goby hunt down and eat the bumblebees?

I wouldn't think so. The biggest knight goby I've ever seen was about three inches nose to tail, and they've got some pretty small mouths. I've also seen both knights and bumblebees that had been housed together in a 20 long without issue. The bumblebees are also more aggressive than the knights so they probably wouldn't take kindly to being hunted.
