Two male Dwarf Gouramis Fighting

Hey guys,

I recently added 2 dwarf gouramis to my tank. One is red and the other is blue. They seem to like to fight a lot, is this normal? The red one seems to be the aggressor and the blue one usually swims away but sometimes it stands its ground and they shimmy in a circle and start biting each other. Other times they swim in proximity and they are fine. Should I be worried or just let them be? Boys will be boys? I don't see the blue one really hiding scared, it just goes on nibbling on the plastic plants after a butt kicking as if nothing happened.

Yes you should be worried. The aggressive one will likely kill the other, by the sound of it. They are not a fish that needs a buddy.

They aren't fighting as much as they were yesterday... maybe they will settle their differences. I'll see if tossing plants in so they won't see each other from the other side of the tank will keep them at bay. I seem to have messed up everyone's territories as my red tail shark is actually swimming up at the top of the tank and doesn't want to mess with the gouramis. Whoever said gouramis are peaceful.... lol.

You can try adding plants or shale for refuge.

Thanks.

I did add a floating plant for cover and another tall one on the opposite side of the tank and they now only occasionally fight. Most of the time they are minding their own business.

two male gouramis of any species will wrestle. i would recommend a 4' tank minimum, but if your 3' is planted with lots of blind spots you might try. i would say that they will not stop fighting, but if no one is being chased, bullied or torn, then its a matter of choice if thats acceptable. if you see torn fins, missing scales, one fish hiding or running scared .... i would ask that you remove one of the males. Thats only my philosophy, you're free to make your own choice obviously, but i would not expect them to become friends.

Similar to my philosophy. I don't mind a bit of animation in the tank as long as there is no harm done... I haven't seen any damage on either fish yet.

Yes, Male Gouramis are like Bettas almost as far as aggression toward each other. The two species are closely related. Anatomy and disposition are very similar.
