lucky, my golden gourami

so today, I was at this pet store and I'm looking though some of the tanks, dead fish... no decor, just gravel, poor colored fish. not a good scene, I was just about to leave when my mom noticed something on the floor halfway acroos the room of aquariums. Upon closer inspection it was a fish laying flat on the floor, right in the middle of the dark room. I went to pick it up to show the owners, it was dry sticky and covered in stuff.... when suddenly it moved slightly and I seen it gasp for air, without even thinking about right or wrong, I slipped it into my sweater pocket. instincts, I dunno. I ran out to the car, grabbed a tea cup I had from that morning, rinsed it with my bottle of water, then filled it up with the aquafina water and plopped lucky inside. He was a bit disoriented, we then drove to the pet store I normally shop at, I bought some live plants and asked for some extra water, then I put lucky in with the plants and drove my hour and half to home. Lucky is alive, and doing well... already eating! He's all alone because I want to make sure he doesnt get sick with anything before I intorduce anymore fishes, this is my first gourami. Just thought I would share my story with you!

As long as the fish is damp, it will survive in borrowed time. Your gourami looks like a female to me. Consider the fact that most male gouramis have pointed tip on their dorsal fins.

Good show! Make sure you have enough room for her. She could get 5 1/2 inches long. My Mama Golden's nearly 4" at almost a year old. Loves floating cichlid pellets, bloodworms, even frozen krill. (Frankly, she'd try to eat the cat or bully a piranha if I were dumb enough to put either in the tank.)

well she has settled in nicely now, not so shy anymore anyways! she is about 4" long currently. She's in a 30 gallon with only 2 kribs that I'm trying to breed, they leave her alone and vice versa. Anyways, I'm wondering... I want to get her a "friend" I'm thinking either a male gold gourami or perhaps an original Blue Gourami male? I dont know too much on gouramis yet, anyone have any advice?

I missed the part where you said you went to find owner than changed mind? Did you get it for free? For being a good humanitarian? :)

oh no, I was going to let the owner know that I found a dead fish on the floor... until it moved. then as bad as it sounds, I guess I stole her. because I took her out to the car and got her help. I'm terrible I know.

She will be fine on her own. Getting a male is not a necessity. Get a male and if both spawn, your female will be attacked and eventually killed.

This is a good story. The fish was not stolen but rather rescued from a negligent owner. Good job!

Thank You! Ok no males for lucky... she's had a hard enough life as it is so far! It's day 3 today and her color is starting to look much better now as well, she's an almost pure golden yellow, with the slightest tiger stripes on the top of her body... she aslo shines an almost ultra violet. I took the kribs out, she's in the 30 gallon all by herself with 3 cloud tetras that seem to prefer her company.
