Gouramis with African Dwarf Frogs?

Hi,

I am new to the forum and recently set up a 20g tank. I have 4 african dwarf frogs, 5 cardinal tetras, and a betta. I'm wondering if I could add a sunset gourami? I've heard conflicting information about gouramis, some sources saying they're peaceful, others calling them semi-aggressive.

I had 5 zebra danios which are known to be "peaceful community fish" but we had to return them because they kept harassing the tetras, nipping their tail fins. The tetras, ADFs and betta all get along great and I don't want to introduce a nippy or bullying fish.

What do you think?

Thanks!
Steph

Your gourami and frogs will be fine together. But your gourami and betta won't. Both are anabantids (air breathers) and oftentimes separate anabantid species won't get along (they become territorial and fight each other). I've heard of it working out, but it's rare.

It's been 5 years...I'm no longer a newbie

20 gal long-otos, glowlight tetra, black phantom tetra, African dwarf frogs
56 gal-zebra loaches, serpae tetra, rosy barbs, bristlenose pleco
2 gal-empty (formerly Mercury-purple veil tail betta

Thanks fishbreeder and kay. It seems there is quite a range among the gourami breed. I've been reading up and the dwarfs seem to be very different in temperment than the bigger gouramis (like fish breeder said). I've also heard that some people feel that you can't ever mix them. But I'm unsure what to believe, because some people seem to think that bettas can't be housed with ANY other fish, and that's obviously untrue.

I really don't want to make a mistake and get incompatible fish. I had to return some zebra danios, which I thought were peaceful community fish, because they were terrorizing my tetras, nipping their fins and beating them to all the food. All I've read about dwarf gouramis is that they're very shy. Then again, it could be the betta that gets irritated, though he is perfectly fine with the tetra and frogs.

A flame dwarf gourami and my betta (teal/purple/red) don't really look anything alike. You really think it would be an issue?

Established tank - New Gouramis nipping AFD

I hope someone is still following this post! I have an established 10g tank with 2 Glofish, 3 Black Skirt Tetras and one African Dwarf (we had a second that died a month ago).

Today I added a Sunset Gourami and a Dwarf Gourami to the tank and have noticed that the Gouramis are nipping at the ADF (I can actually see little pieces of skin hanging from his body). I moved the AFD to a breeder to keep it safe but am worried that I am going to have to return the Gouramis.

Would this be better if I had more than one AFD? Is there any chance that the Gouramis will be less aggressive once they are used to the tank?

There is a rather new thread here entitled Established tank- New Gouramis Nipping at ADF. You might want to correspond with the author. As has been mentioned, mixing the betta with gouramis could be a problem also.
