You guys gave me too long to think, so I changed my mind! I am going back to the 3-stripe with those barbs and ("bigger lol") species of rasbora. I can't remember if a school of dwarf loaches would work.

I know that a setup with 3 spots (3 3 spots) can cause some trouble, but the entire reason I wanted to make this a gourami tank in the first place (and still do) was so I can get a gold gourami. This is a 55g tank, how could it be more suitable for 3-stripe? I saw them at Petsmart the other day, and I knew I would never forgive myself if I paid over $100 for a gourami tank and not have a gold gourami. It is the reason for the "gourami obsession"! You guys understand, right?

I know I am late to the party but thought I would chime in with my Gourami experience. Like you, I wanted to have several Gourami in my 60 gallon tank. I started out with 4 total. 2 Blue/Opaline and 2 Gold. I had also had 9 Tiger Barbs in the tank. The problem started soon after the introduction. No problem at all with my Tiger Barbs, it was a Gourami vs. Gourami war. My Gold Gourami attacked and killed one of the blue, then the other Gold.

I removed the other Gold one before it did in my last remaining Blue. I LOVE that blue Gourami and am so happy that it gets along happily in my tank with my Tiger Barbs, a few Platies and a Rainbow Shark. The Gourami is sort of the showcase fish in the tank and really looks beautiful as a contrast to the Gold and black striped Barbs. Oh, and I did add 2 more Tiger Barbs so I have a total of 11. That way, they keep their nit picking to themselves and don't bother Blue. Blue is also much larger then them at around 6 inches long.

I am sort of aware of the danger of gourami-aggression. I will watch them carefully, my petstore will take any gourami (that isn't half dead) that I give it (and I get more free fish!).

Don't worry about chimeing in, it will probably be several months before I even have enough for the filtration (amazon tank is priority #1, several other projects).

That means you're going to change your mind several more times

What's a 3 stripe?

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta

I might change my mind for what kind of tank I want this to be (e.g. goldfish, gourami), but as far as gouramis, I don't think so.

I know I have been back-and-forth on other setups, but if I am setting up a gourami tank, I plan on getting 3-spot.

Suggestions?
