Dwarf Honey Guaramis

Hi there everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a couple of Dwarf Honey Guaramis (not sure if spelling is correct) and they sometimes go black on their bellies from their nose to their tail. Can anyone shed any light on why this is, is this normal or are they stressed.

Look forward to solving the mystery!!!

Jill :D

The only thing I can say is that I have heard of (and seen) black happening from ammonia burn.
Have you tested your water?

Fish have taken over my house. I threw away my couch to make room for another 125 gallon.

Mature male honey gouramis have dark blue on their nose running down their ventral surface. I have never kept them, so I do not know if this is a trait that varies from time to time, but I do know it is characteristic of males of the species. If you have two honey gouramis in the same tank and they're both doing that, then you have two males, and, sooner or later one will get hurt unless it is a big enough tank that they can each stake out their own territory.

The colors in the males will get darker from time to time when they are ready for spawning. If there are no females in the tank and it's well decorated, everything should be fine. It could be compared to a woman's menstrual cycle. You'll notice it comes and goes. It's normal, just make sure they have enough territory to avoid them hurting each other with fighting for dominance or territory.
