I attempted to house a crowntail male with a dwarf powder blue and a dwarf flame gourami (both male). This was in a 20 gallon with no other fish and plenty of hiding areas for them (fake plants and decor/caves), and the betta had been living in the tank for about 2 weeks prior to adding the gouramis.
At first, he betta was doing a lot of flaring, showing off, and the gouramis just ignored him. When he saw he wasn't getting any attention, he got a little de-spirited and went and sulked for a bit.
However, about an hour or so later, he came around for round two and started terrorizing the powder blue gourami, and the first time he fin bit him, he was promptly removed and put into his own tank.
