Blue Gourami???

I have 2 blue gourami and they do fine together most of the day. After feeding one gets aggressive towards the other. I got them both at the same time. I am not sure if they are both male or not. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

If I remember correctly, Gouramis do best in groups of three or four, or more. This spreads the aggression out and allows for a more stable caste within the tank.

Perhaps other gourami-ists can chime in?

Tanks: 40 gal FW setup, 10 gal Reef tank.

Most lfs's sell males only. Females, generally lack color. So,..... more than likely you have two males.

Do you have lots of hiding places/plants in the tank?

I have 2 plants but they arent big enough for the fish to hide behind yet so hopefully once they grow bigger it will help

Is this in your 20 gallon tank? I don't think you have room for 2 blue gourami's in that size tank.

150 Gallon - Mostly American Cichlids
135 Gallon - Angelfish Community
75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty

Id second that. 20g isnt a whole ton of room for 2 blue gourami. MAYBE 30g, but thats a whole lot of active fish for either a 20g or a 30g when they get all growed up.

HOWEVER... do they nip or just chase? my gouramis chase each other all day long.. Ive never seen either one with battle damage though

They just chase. I have been checking on them every chance I get to make sure they aren't actually harming eachother.

Folks, small tanks are ok for fish if plans are in the works for upgrading in the future. If you would come to my house, visit the fishroom., you would find upwards to 100 fry in a 15g-25g. Am I over stocked? I would hardly think so. But if I posted that I had 20 Victorian cichlids in a 20g tank, I would hear all of you saying, "Your tank is WAY overstocked." lol

We so many times fail to take into consideration the size of the fish when we buy them. Most are smaller, immature fish that still have growing to do. This is the first step to getting MTS. Don't be so harsh on the beginner and let them develop full blown MTS. It's really not all that bad.

Yeah, I hear ya. Just as long as the beginner is aware that they will have to get a bigger tank in the future.
And MTS grabs another victim. Muhahaha!
